Sorry, but this is a bit of an English lesson with some Celtic and American tossed in.

The original Celtic festival of Samhain pronounced sah-win (hear it here at Dictionary.com) where it was believed ghosts would rise at night. 2,000 years ago, Samhain marked the end of summer and the harvest, and ushered in the long dark nights of winter. People would leave food outside their doors to ward off the ghosts, and dress up like ghosts if they had to go out so they would be taken for just another spirit.

Enter Pope Gregory III in the eighth century. He designated November 1 as All Saints Day using many of the traditions of Samhain. The night before was known as All Hallows’ Eve, as Hallow actually means Saints, became known as Halloween.

Back in Britain, a few new traditions were added to the mix. “Souling” was when the needy would beg for special “Soul Cakes” in exchange for praying for the giver and their deceased family members. “Guising” was when young people would dress up in costume and accept food, wine and money in exchange for singing, poetry and telling jokes.

Immigrants brought these traditions to America which became known as Trick or Treating. Up until the 1950’s, the night was more about tricks than treats. History.com

After that, Halloween evolved into what it is today – the 2nd most profitable holiday in America. This year, it is projected that $9.1 billion will be spent on Halloween! The Balance
