Remembering Decoration Day, now known as Memorial Day

Memorial Day became a day of remembrance for the fallen in the Civil War with graves decorated with flowers and flags. While the exact origins are up to debate, one story tells of freed Black slaves who in May 1865, went to a former Confederate prison camp on the grounds of a racetrack in Charleston, SC, to give a proper burial to 257 Union soldiers. An arch dedication “Martyrs of the Race Course” was erected above the landscaped and fenced cemetery.

Another story from late April 1866, tells of Mississippi women heading to a cemetery to put flowers on the graves of Confederate soldiers that died in the Battle of Shiloh. They noticed that the Confederate graves were well kept while the Union’s were not. They decided to decorate all the graves.

Then, in May of 1868, General Logan called for May 30 to be designated as the day to decorate the “graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion”. As Logan was a northern general, the southern states picked their own day to celebrate.

Following the end of World War I, Decoration Day became a day to honor all who have fallen for America. Following World War II, it became known as Memorial Day.In 1971, Congress established the last Monday in May as Memorial Day, now seen as the start of summer.
