Veterans Day – a day to honor all our veterans
Following the end of the Great War, the war to end all wars, on November 11, 1918; Armistice Day was created by President Woodrow Wilson. It’s a day to honor all those who served in World War I. A moment of silence is observed at 11am, the time the armistice, the formal agreement to stop fighting, was signed.
Following World War II and the Korean War, the day was changed to Veterans Day by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on June 1, 1954.
Veterans Day continues to be celebrated on November 11. For a few years, under the Uniform Holiday Bill, it was moved to the fourth Monday in October in 1971 but, due to opposition to this move from many states, it was returned to November 11 by President Ford in 1975. VA
There are more than 21 million veterans with over 2 million being women. Of the 16 million who served in WWII, about 620,000 are still alive.
